TIRANA, July 21 – The agreement on serving the sentence of Albanian prisoners sentenced in Britain has been adopted by the Albanian government but will be officially signed by the two Ministers of Justice in September in London.
According to this agreement, any prisoner who has more than 4 years of his sentence left, he can serve the remaining sentence in Albanian prisons if he agrees, and for each one of them, the British government will pay 36.5 Euros for each day he will stay in prison. But before they are moved to Albanian prisons, the Albanian courts must convert the sentence according to the country’s laws.
The only convicts who will be able to serve their sentence in Albania without first giving their consent are those for whom the British courts have ordered deportation from the territory of the United Kingdom.
The British daily “Telegraph” in an article on Thursday wrote that the agreement provides for the transfer to Albanian prisons of those convicted of serious crimes, citing concrete names, but the Albanian Minister of Justice in a communication with TV Klan denied that it is specified for this category of convicts.
According to him, in the document agreed after the accord between the two Prime Ministers Rama and Sunak last December, there are no specifications for the type of punishment for the prisoners who will serve the remainder of their sentence in Albanian prisons.
As part of the agreement between the two governments, there is also the allocation of 5 million euros that will be used for the reconstruction of prisons and the training of prison employees, a fund that will be managed by the British embassy in Tirana. /argumentum.al
