TIRANA, August 24 – Asked about the Beleri case EC spokesperson, Ana Pisonero told Report TV on Thursday that the European Union does not interfere in Albanian justice issues which in this particular case is about Fredi Beleri, elected Himara Mayor, arrested prior to the May 14 elections after being involved in the scheme of purchase of vote. “We are continuing to follow developments, but we do not comment on matters under investigation,” EC spokeswoman Pisonero said.
The representative of the media in the EU told Report TV that there was a call to the judicial authorities. “We call to make sure that the process is properly followed,” she said.
Beleri’s stay in prison prevents him from taking the oath as Mayor. According to Albanian law, if Beleri is not sworn in within a period of 3 months after the constitution of the Municipal Council, then the Albanian government has the right to dismiss him. The council was constituted on June 27, which means Beleri’s maximum deadline for swearing in is September 27. This issue has become a hot topic between Greece and Albania. /argumentum.al
