TIRANA, August 31 – Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted after the Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood in the European Union, Oliver Varhelyi, agreed with the proposal of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel for the enlargement of the EU in 2030.
Commissioner Varleyi has never disappointed the Western Balkans, especially in difficult times, said the PM in a post on social networks on Thursday.
“It must be admitted that after the unexpected speech of the president of the European Council, Charles Michel at the Bled Strategic Forum, the EU slow bus is becoming an interesting place to stay even without a free seat,” said Rama, who added that there is no doubt that the Western Balkans passengers can better endure the long duration of the journey, following a loud conversation between the “seated boys”.
“Let’s hear what happens next,” said Rama.
Earlier, Commissioner Varhelyi welcomed every decision taken by the Council in a post on networks.
“I welcome that the Council wants to finally commit and take a big step to realize the expansion. The European Commission has always been ready to make any proposal that would lead us towards the expansion of 2030,” he said.
The European Commission on Tuesday dropped Charles Michel’s EU enlargement target by setting 2030 as the timeline, backing away from his statements that the bloc should be ready to accept new members in 2030.
The deputy spokeswoman for the European Commission Dana Spinant said in a press conference on Tuesday, “We are not focused on a date, but focused on working very closely with candidate countries to get ready for joining the European Union”. /argumentum.al
