Michael Roth, the Chair of the Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, said that the additional conditions imposed by the United States for Kosovo’s joining of the Council of Europe unfair.
“It’s completely incomprehensible that the US sets extra conditions for Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe. This unbalanced approach by the US towards Kosovo must finally stop. It’s unfair and unjust,” Roth wrote on X platform.
He also wrote it is the Council of Europe and its member states who should make decisions, not the US.
The comment comes a day after US Special Envoy for the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar said that there are two more conditions before Kosovo to meet before it joins the CoE, which are the formation of the Community of the Serb-majority Municipalities and the issue of land expropriation in the north of Kosovo.
In his comment, Roth also shared a post of his Bundestag colleague, Frank Schwabe, who commented on the same matter.
“With all due respect to the US Special Envoy to the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, the Council of Europe is making things possible that others could not achieve. And we will decide on Kosovo’s application for membership based on our own rules and values,” he wrote./Argumentum.al
