TIRANA – The former head of the Academy of Sciences of Albania (ASA), Gudar Beqiraj has passed away, an announcement by that institution said on Monday. ASA’s announcement said Beqiraj passed away unexpectedly on the day when it was his birthday. He was 72 years old. The Tirana-based Academy praised Beqiri as its member who has left more traces in the institutional life of the institution.
“Gudar Beqiraj was the man of research and passions, of scientific work and leadership, of management responsibilities and olympic volunteerism, of expertise in the field of applicable informatics within and outside the country,” said the Academy.
Gudar Beqiraj, who was also a well- known weightlifter (1967-1974), has held several important positions, such as dean, vice chairman and chairman of the Academy of Sciences, vice chairman of the National Olympic Committee and chief of Albanian delegations to the Olympic Games. He has also received many awards, among which is the Gold Medal for his contribution to weightlifting by the International Weightlifting Federation.
Academic Prof. Dr. Gudar Beqiraj graduated from the University of Tirana, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Department of Mathematics. He specialized in Geostatistics at the Center for Geostatistics in Fontainbleau of France, as well as in the methods of applied informatics in Geophysics at the University Paris VI in France. In 2003 he received the title “Academic” awarded to him by the Academy of Sciences of Albania. Afterwards, in 2012 Beqiraj became a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
