TIRANA – Operation Green Brazil 2 Operations were launched, on 11 May 2020, in the Brazilian Amazon region, in the framework of “Operation Green Brazil 2” with the aim of further preventing and combating environmental crimes, as well as fighting fires, as part of immediate actions proposed by the National Council of the Legal Amazon, said a press release issued by the Embassy of Brazil in Tirana on Tuesday.
“These operations, coordinated by the Ministry of Defence, started in the National Forests of Jacundá and Vila Samuel, in the State of Rondônia. They include the deployment of agents from the Brazilian environment agency IBAMA and the biodiversity conservation institute ICMBio, from the Brazilian Army, the Federal Police, the Federal Highway Police and the National Security Force, as well as Brazilian Navy vessels and Armed Forces aircraft,” said the press release.
The operations are being launched from Porto Velho (state of Rondônia), Cuiabá (Mato Grosso) and Marabá (Pará). According to the information of the press release, their planning was based on intelligence reports by the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN) and on satellite images generated by the Operational and Administrative Centre of the Amazon Protection System (CENISPAM) which identified illegal activities being carried out in areas protected by Federal Law.
“At the moment, IBAMA and ICMBio personnel are undertaking raids and imposing penalties under the protection of federal forces,” concluded the press release. /argumentum.al
