TIRANA – At a time when nearby countries like Slovenia and Montenegro have declared their territories free of the coronavirus, North Macedonia is facing another resurgence of COVID-19.
After its initial firm management of the situation and success in reducing the number of daily infections to single-digit figures, things have decidedly taken a turn for the worse, reported Birn news agency on Wednesday.
A worrying new peak was reached on Monday, when the country reported 89 infections and seven deaths. On Wednesday morning the Public Health Institute said today’s numbers are even higher, at around 100 infections, said Birn news agency on Wednesday.
This seems dangerously close to the previous peak of 107 infections recorded on April 16, which many thought would not be repeated.
By prematurely dropping restrictive measures in order to allegedly allow the frozen election campaign to resume, experts say, North Macedonia risks seeing a second wave of coronavirus that is just as bad as the first.
In neighboring Albania the ‘Grand Opening’ on June 1 with more than 99 percent of activities restarting there are steady double-digit figures of the new cases with 20 infected people on Wednesday. It is particularly concerning the opening of the kindergartens and nursing houses.
Albania has also declared open its land borders with its neighbors./argumentum.al
