TIRANA – Albania’s trade deficit fell by 14.9% year-on-year in the first five months of 2020 – to 117 billion leks ($1.05 billion/940 million euro), the national statistical office said on Wednesday.
Exports decreased by 19.4% on the year to 102 billion leks in the period under review, while imports fell by 17.1% to 219 billion leks, INSTAT said in a statement as quoted by SeeNews on Wednesday.
In May alone, Albania’s trade deficit totalled 23 billion leks, down 25.6% year-on-year.
Italy remained Albania’s main trading partner in the January-May period, absorbing Albanian exports of 46.4 billion leks and providing 52.2 billion leks worth of imports to the country. Other major exporters to Albania were Greece, Germany and Turkey.
Albania’s fall in exports in the first five months of the year was mostly influenced by decreases in minerals, fuels and electricity, textile and footwear and the construction materials and metals group./argumentum.al
