Any unilateral act that violates the June 5 Political Agreement would be intolerable, has harshly warned President Ilir Meta who in the meantime praised the move of the opposition pushing for the complete opening the electoral lists.
Albania is to hold parliamentary elections on April 25 next year.
In a message on Facebook on Monday Meta welcomed the formalization of the proposals of the United Opposition in the Political Council, which submitted the draft with several requests, which required the opening of 100% of the lists on Sunday.
The head of state stressed that the opposition is determined to build consensus, while adding that ‘Rilindja’ (Renaissance) insists on the conflict, the distortion of elections and the abolition of the Political Council as a consensus decision-making instrument.
Earlier on Monday Socialist Party (SP) announced that the amended Electoral Code will be adopted in this week’s plenary session of Parliament.
“The opposition is determined to build consensus as opposed to the Renaissance, which insists on conflict, election distortion and the annihilation of the Political Council as a consensual decision-making instrument,” he said, adding that the draft presented by the opposition realizes the opening of the lists 100% and the full respect of gender equality, despite the deception and closure of 100% of the lists by Rilindja.
The opposition draft respects the consensus reached and the June 5 Agreement, and additionally seeks the opinion of the ODIHR on matters of disagreement, as an impartial party and as official election observers.
“Any unilateral act that overturns the June 5 Agreement would be an intolerable assassination and provocation to the constitutional and democratic order and the European future of the country,” said Meta../argumentum.al
