Citizens of Serbian origin from Kosovo and Serbia gathered at the memorial erected to commemorate the Battle of Kosovo at Gazimestan in Kosovo to mark the Serbian holiday of Vidovdan on Monday. Kosovo police and KFOR troops were at the scene.
The ceremony which is organized annually was also attended by Patriarch of Serbian orthodox Church, Profirije and several low ranking Serbian political officials and Kosovo political representatives. The Ottoman empire defeated a Serbian army on 28 June 1389 at the Battle of Kosovo, marking the start of centuries of Ottoman rule in the Balkans. No serious incidents were reported during the rituals.
In a separate event Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Vetevendosje MP Hydajet Hyseni met Nenad Canak, the leader of the Social Democrats of Vojvodina, on Monday.
Kurti and the opposition politician in Serbia agreed that Belgrade should open its archives and offer information on location of suspected mass graves in Serbia’s territory.
“Kurti informed Canak that there are 1,632 people who are considered as missing adding that the Government will do its outmost for finding all the missing persons, regardless of their ethnicity,” according to a statement issued by the Government of Kosovo.
Kurti and Canak discussed the need on strengthening social democracy in the region, the new dialogue on the status of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, based on equality, such as mutual recognition. /argumentum.al
