Albania considers press freedom a pillar of democracy and parliament is determined to protect press freedom and journalists’ security, Speaker Lindita Nikolla told the visiting OSCE representative for media freedom, Teresa Ribeiro in a meeting on Tuesday.
“The Parliament is determined to guarantee the freedom of the press in a complete and unhindered way. We also remain committed to cooperating to ensure the safety of journalists, as well as access to reliable information through a free, independent, pluralistic and diversified press, applying international standards,” said Nikolla.
Ribeiro congratulated Nikolla on her election as Speaker of Parliament and noted the OSCE’s willingness to cooperate in improving Albanian media legislation in line with the Venice Commission’s recommendations, the EU and OSCE standards, as well as by harmonizing public need, legality and proportionality through a comprehensive process. / argumentum.al
