In addition to vetting in politics, the opposition Democratic Party (DP) has demanded tougher sentencing for electoral crimes, based on Italian law.
This demand was made by the DP head, Lulzim Basha on Monday.
In his reaction, Basha said that politicians who are elected with the votes of criminals should be sentenced to 22 years in prison and banned from exercising public functions forever.
In addition to vetting in politics, in order to put an end once and for all to the connections of the criminal world with politics, the DP will propose the amendment of the Criminal Code in accordance with the Italian Criminal Code toughening the sentences for anyone who commits electoral crimes, said Basha. According to him, anyone who directly or through intermediaries accepts the promise to win votes from elements of organized crime, in exchange for money or other favors, will be sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Further on Basha said the same punishment is provided for elements of organized crime who have made such promises, or anyone else who turns out to be involved. “If a politician involved in such a scheme is elected, he is sentenced to 22 years in prison. The politician and anyone involved in such activities are permanently barred from holding public office.”
The government and the fate of Albanians can not be dictated by corruption and organized crime and the Democratic Party will do everything to make the voice of Albanian citizens heard and their will respected, said Basha. /Argumentum.al
