Denial of the 1999 Recak massacre in Kosovo by Serbian government officials has provoked strong reactions in Kosovo and international authorities, who have responded by saying that the Recak massacre is a well-documented atrocity. Immediately after the statement of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Serbia, Aleksandar Vulin, who called the Recak massacre a “great lie and extraordinary fabrication” came the reaction of the spokesman of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Peter Stano, who stressed on Saturday that “the Recak massacre can not be denied, nor should what happened in this village of Kosovo in 1999 be modified.”
“What happened in Recak, Kosovo, and the atrocities committed there in January 1999 are well documented,” said Peter Stano.
There have also been reactions from the United States. “The atrocities that took place in Recak in January 1999, including the massacre of civilians, are well documented,” the State Department said in a statement. “Survivors honor the victims and keep alive the divisions that continue to hamper lasting reconciliation, peace and prosperity for the Western Balkans.”
In a statement to the media, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani said “denial through the rehabilitation of war criminals is a repeated crime.”
President Osmani said that Aleksandar Vulin is trying to change the historical facts with propaganda.
“Vulin’s tendencies reveal Serbia’s ambition to change history, it is the long-standing effort of this country in relation to Kosovo,” said President Osmani.
