Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Friday that the real culprits for the January 21 murders are found at Foltoret (rostrums organized by the former Democratic Party (DP) PM Sali Berisha) and behind the armored doors that have locked SHQUP (DP headquarters).
In an online conversation with citizens about the January 21 event, where four protesters were killed, Rama said that “if we do not deal with the criminals who pulled the trigger and the rifle, the real culprits for those murders are one on the rostrum of that revolution that aims to take SHQUP and the other behind the armored doors that aims to hold the lock of SHQUP.”
“To say that four people were killed because they should not have gone to the boulevard that day means not to deserve any comment,” Rama said. Prime Minister Rama stressed that “today, on the 11th anniversary of January 21, there are old reasons to keep the head lowered, but there are also new reasons, I believe, to raise the head up.”
Eleven years ago, four protesters were killed as part of a violent protest organized by the opposition Socialist Party. Protesters destroyed the prime minister’s office building and burned decorative trees in front of the building, clashing with police.
Rama called the protest completely peaceful and harmless to anyone.
The head of the government said that “today I saw commentators talking from behind the lock or from the top of the stairs saying that I am the guilty person, something which has been said often since the beginning of the event… and the reason is because I called people to protest.”
Rama stressed that “those who say that it is my fault and the government really deserve a comment, because the real culprits are still free and even continue to give serial shows of violent clashes in downtown Tirana.”
