“We have taken a very important decision, which has two economic components that do not simply aim at the development of this area, Durres, or Albania, but aim at a regional economic development,” said Minister of Infrastructure and Energy (MEI) Belinda Balluku during a visit to the port of Durres together with Kosovo counterpart Liburn Aliu on Monday.
Balluku said many of the works of the MEI of Albania and the Ministry of Transport of Kosovo are related and they have joint projects among which the return of the existing port of Durres to a modern waterfront, which turns Albania into a tourist spot, one of the most powerful in the Mediterranean region, attaching them to the Durrës basin and a yacht port, which will be one of the largest in the entire Mediterranean area.
According to her, the international commercial port of Durres should be relocated to an industrial area allowing the city to truly turn into a Mediterranean tourist hot spot.
At the moment, Balluku stressed, they are in the design phase of the new Port of Durres, which will be in Porto Romano.
The Minister added that the winning company is the prestigious Dutch company “Royal Haskoning”.
“Now we are waiting for the first draft somewhere in early April, which will be the draft of the new port, where without a doubt, we do not intend to accommodate only the needs of Albania and Kosovo, but the entire region,” said Balluku.
While Minister Liburn Aliu stressed that, “projects that connect Kosovo and Albania will bring rapid and joint economic development.” Speaking about the transport of hydrocarbons, Aliu said that, “it is very important that the port is connected to the railway”.
At the moment that this railway connection is created between the port of Durres and Pristina the latter has its already designed and ongoing connections that connect it with North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia and Austria. “This will create the possibility that the goods coming to the Port of Durres have a destination not only in Kosovo, but in the whole region,” said Aliu. / Argumentum.al
