The Head of the EU Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Luigi Soreca was on a visit to Korca, southeastern Albania, on Monday where he was asked by journalists about the veteran Democratic Party (DP) leader, Sali Berisha and his participation in the local by-elections of March 6.
Soreca said that the EU has said before that it does not comment and does not interfere in the internal affairs of political parties.
When asked by journalists that Berisha has not withdrawn from politics but why he has been declared persona non grata by the US State Department, Soreca said: “I do not want to comment on the internal developments of the party, we have never intervened. We will continue our work on all issues related to the future of the country, especially the vetting process.”
The EU ambassador held almost a similar stance when asked about the conviction of the former interior minister, Saimir Tahiri. He said he would not like to comment on the position of the courts.
According to Soreca, the EU has supported and will continue to support the Justice Reform, while welcoming the extension of the vetting deadlines.
He also added that the EU will continue to cooperate with the Democratic Party regardless of who will be the chairman, which is a different position from that of US Ambassador, Yuri Kim, who has stated that if Berisha becomes head of the DP, Washington will not cooperate with that political force. / Argumentum.al
