The extraordinary session of the European Parliament (EP) on Tuesday is expected to adopt a resolution, which was also cosponsored by Albania, denouncing the Russian aggression against Ukraine, expressing support for the resistance of the Ukrainian people and criticizing Serbia for not joining the EU sanctions against Russia.
It is obvious that the EP also expressed concern about Russia’s attempts to destabilize the Western Balkans region.
“We note with deep concern the persistent efforts of the Russian Federation to destabilize the countries of the Western Balkans and interfere in their democratic processes,” the text of the resolution reads.
It condemns countries that “have expressed support for the Russian Federation for the aggression against Ukraine and welcomes the support expressed by those countries of the Western Balkans which are Euro-Atlantic allies.”
“We strongly regret that Serbia does not comply with EU sanctions against Russia, which undermines the EU membership process, and reiterates the expectation that EU candidates will comply not only with EU law, but also with the bloc’s foreign and security policy,” the resolution said.
Dozens of diplomats from the European Union, United States and Britain walked out of a speech by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to the top UN human rights forum on Tuesday, according to a Reuters witness.
Lavrov was addressing the UN Human Rights Council remotely, having cancelled his attendance earlier due to what the Russian mission in Geneva said on Monday were EU states blocking his flight path. / Argumentum.al
