French President Emmanuel Macron has urged President Aleksandar Vucic for Serbia to maintain a clear stance in support of Ukraine and its territorial integrity. This demand was made during a phone talk between the two presidents on Sunday, according to the French presidential office.
The focus of the conversation was the war in Ukraine after the military aggression by Russia, launched in the early hours of the morning of February 24, 11 days ago.
The French president also recalled Serbia’s European path and stressed that Belgrade must maintain the prospect of EU membership.
Below is the statement of the French presidency:
The President of the Republic (Emmanuel Macron) spoke on the phone with the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic on Saturday, March 5, 2022.
The President (Macron) welcomed the close cooperation between France and Serbia and demanded the clarity of its position in international bodies on the war in Ukraine and the necessary respect for the state sovereignty of Ukraine.
He also recalled France’s friendship and personal support for Serbia. The President of the Republic considered that the war in Ukraine requires the unification of the European Union and all countries close to it, countries which, like Serbia, have been given a European perspective, to jointly explore ways and further strengthen their ties and build a common future for all Europeans.
The war in Ukraine should be an opportunity for European rapprochement. The President of the Republic and his Serbian counterpart will remain in close contact. /Argumentum.al
