Polls have closed in Serbia as election officials reported a high turnout as citizens of the Balkan nation voted in a presidential election in which populist incumbent Aleksandar Vucic, who has boasted about his personal ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SPP) are expected to to win another five-year term.
Voters also cast ballots on April 3 in parliamentary elections, which Vucic’s right-wing SPP is expected to dominate, while several municipal elections, including in the capital, Belgrade, were held as well.
The country’s election commission estimated a turnout of 58-60 percent, substantially higher than the 48.8 percent reported in the 2020 parliamentary vote. /argumentum.al
