TIRANA, May 4 – “Relations between Albania and Lithuania are very good and friendly, while there is mutual will to further strengthen and intensify cooperation in all areas of mutual interest,” said Foreign Minister Olta Xhacka, who received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Gabrielius Landsbergis in Tirana on Wednesday.
Xhacka said in a press conference after the official talks that the visit is the first of her Lithuanian counterpart in Albania and has an even more special meaning, as it is realized only a few days after the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between two countries.
“Today, my colleague Landsbergis and I signed a Memorandum of Understanding for Bilateral Consultations between our two Foreign Ministries, which we believe will give a new impetus to our political dialogue,” Xhacka announced.
She added that they also discussed the process of Albania’s integration into the EU and in this context opinions were exchanged about the importance of this process, not only for Albania, but also for the entire Union. “We hope that the EU will decide to hold the First Intergovernmental Conference with Albania as soon as possible. However, I assured my colleague Landsbergis that Albania will continue the reform process.”
Xhacka also added that a very important topic on which opinions were exchanged was the current security situation in Europe within the framework of the Ukrainian war. She also said that the situation in the Western Balkans region was also an important point during the conversation.
On his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Landsbergis expressed his satisfaction that he is in Tirana in the framework of the celebration of the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. “I believe that our bilateral relations will continue and we will continue our discussions together,” he said. In the meantime Landsbergis expressed the hope for a quicker accession of Albania and North Macedonia in the EU. He added that the war in Ukraine is unjustifiable and Russia is acting wildly. /Argumentum.al
