TIRANA, May 10 – The Parliamentary Conference of Chairmen decided on Tuesday that the parliament will convene to hold the first round of the election of the new president of Albania on May 16.
It was also decided at the meeting that the deadline for the submission of documentation by the candidates will be May 15, at 16:00, while a day later on May 16, at 10 o’clock, the Law Commission will convene to review the candidacies.
The Socialist Party (SP) proposed May 16, at 17:00 to hold the first round for the election of the new president of the Republic.
The chairman of the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party, Taulant Balla stated at the meeting of the Chairmen that, “I stand by the proposal made to hold the first round on May 16, at 17:00 in a special session, as provided by the articles 86 and 87 of the Constitution and articles of the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly.”
The chairman of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party (DP), Enkelejd Alibeaj stressed that it would be good for the Albanians to elect the president, but unfortunately there is no such constitutional opportunity.
There has been a proposal that the opposition led by the Re-foundation Commission might present a presidential candidate but there is no confirmation if any move is being made in this direction. /Argumentum.al
