TIRANA, May 21 – President Ilir Meta commented on the proposal made on Friday by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel during his visit to Tirana, where he stressed that Albania could become an ‘associate state’ of the European Union.
At a press conference on Saturday the president said that written obligations are important for a EU candidate country.
“The ideas put forward by certain individuals, regardless of the functions they hold, are interesting. But more important are the written obligations voted by the highest EU institutions that elect such officials, and hold them accountable,” said Meta. According to him, the written obligations are inevitable for a country seeking to become an EU member.
In the meantime, Meta said the presidential ‘castle’ was surrounded by the most treacherous offsprings of the country, but it was the people who pushed them back.
“I keep my promises. I told you that until July 24 the institution will be the castle, and it has been. It has been a castle surrounded by the most treacherous offsprings of this country. Then the people were called and the people surrounded them, and they withdrew from their decisions,” Meta said.
Further he said he thinks he is not able to do everything and that he had no miraculous abilities. Calling the government of Edi Rama as a ‘gangster government’ Meta said he was aware of what would happen to the presidential institution.
“You say why did you not leave? I took the constitutional oath. The constitutional deadline is also part of this oath. Then the responsibility for everything will be met by Mr. or Mrs. President, whom we wish success. I will have other responsibilities in relation to the citizens. I will be a loyal citizen and an unprecedented soldier for the protection of the values of the republic as I have shown in this task,” said President Meta, who has declared that he will return to the Socialist Movement for Integration which he has founded. /Argumentum.al
