TIRANA, August 10 – The branch of the opposition Democratic Party (DP) in Kukes, northeastern Albania, commemorated the poet of free speech, Hafzi Nela on the 34th anniversary of his hanging by the communist regime.
Citizens and DP representatives laid wreaths at the anti-communist hero’s monument.
The poet’s brother, Shukri Nela, asked Prime Minister Edi Rama on this anniversary to at least apologize for the signature that his father Kristaq Rama, who was a member of the Presidium of the People’s Assembly of Albania during communism, put for the hanging of Havzi Nela.
The late father of Rama signed the verdict on the death sentence of Havzi Nela while some former members of the Presidium of the Assembly did not accept to put their signatures.
“At least he should apologize. He has repeatedly said that he did not believe that his father signed for the hanging of Havzi Nela. Here is the signature. This is the signature of Kristaq Rama together with 6 others,” said Havzi Nela’s brother.
The witness of Havzi Nela’s hanging, Samedin Cerkezi, narrated how the event happened on August 10, 1988.
“I was here when Havzi Nela was hanged. I am an eyewitness. He didn’t die, he passed away. He is in our hearts and the generations to come. The hatred for the death of Havzi Nela terrifies the security of (late communist dictator) Enver Hoxha, who even today has hatred for democracy, freedom and justice,” said Cekrezi.
The chairman of Kukes DP branch, Admir Sinamati, said in his remarks after placing the wreath of flowers in front of the bust that August 10 will be remembered as the day of the Martyr of Democracy, Havzi Nela.
Even the chairman of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, commemorated the poet, Havzi Nela on Wednesday.
“We commemorate with honor the poet martyr, Havzi Nela, the symbol of free speech and human dignity, who ignored death to remain eternal as the poet of freedom. Today, he inspires more than ever for the triumph of free speech and freedom through the echo of his verses,” said Meta in a post on social networks. /Argumentum.al
