TIRANA, August 26 – The membership of the countries of the Western Balkans in the EU cannot be held hostage for reasons of national policies and that this process is not an economic and political project, but a peace project, said the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel in a joint press conference with his host, Prime Minister Edi Rama in Tirana on Friday.
“We cannot decide on the future of a country for national reasons,” said Bettel who was on an official visit to Albania.
Bettel recalled that in ’57, the Treaty of Rome was immediately after the Second World War, where France and Germany were enemies, and it was possible to have peace in European territory from that time.
The Prime Minister of Luxembourg revealed that he had talked with Rama about how Albania can participate in the most active way. “You entered the first lounge and you have the next lounge.”
Bettel touched upon the cooperation between the two countries in several areas, such as economy, culture and tourism.
“We have enterprises, firms from Luxembourg that are investing in the region and it is important that when they make selections, Albania takes part in the selection process. This is exactly the reason for this invitation. I was a little late to come and meet in Tirana, but I hope that you will come to Luxembourg as soon as possible and see how we can convince the different parties to come here,” said Bettel.
