TIRANA, September 7 – Interior Minister Bledi Çuçi has commented on the statement of the former Police Director, Gledis Nano, about the alleged de-conspiracy of 14 mafia operations in Albania during the time he was in charge of the Albanian police forces.
Çuçi said that investigations will begin regarding this statement, which he described as disturbing.
“If the director did not know, how the ministry would have known,” the minister justified himself placing the blame on the former top police officer whose dismissal turned into a three-day enigma in Tirana.
Nano, a favorite of the US Ambassador, Yuri Kim, has never accepted that he had resigned leading to the conclusion that he was fired. So far there is no clear indication of what turned him into an adversary of PM Edi Rama.
Çuçi was cut and sharp in his statement on Wednesday, announcing that Nano will be investigated.
“It is definitely disturbing and part of the daily work of the state police. Regarding the former director’s statement, if the general director of the police knew when he was in office, the minister would hardly know. We will investigate, we will deepen the investigation. The former police director who made this statement will also be included, in order to discover the truth,” said Çuçi.
Nano was fired a few days ago after arguments with the interior minister. The debates between them have reportedly been harsh. The minister asked Nano to resign, but he refused. Çuçi gave him a deadline, but Nano did not take it into account and then he was fired.
On Wednesday, as it was expected, Muhamet Rrrumbullaku was officially appointed Director General of Police and the formal ceremony will be held on Thursday morning during which he will take his full competencies.
Nano is the first top police officer to be sacked during the ruling of the Socialist Party and analysts claim that the contradictions are not limited only with the minister but involve the PM, Edi Rama and their cause is linked with corrupt affairs whose number has risen steeply during 2022. It remains to be seen how much the public opinion will be informed on what happened within the top ranks of police which have been accused of being involved in corrupt affairs. /Argumentum.al
