Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday strongly condemned Albania for cutting diplomatic ties with the Islamic Republic and called the anti-Iran allegations levelled by the southeastern European country unfounded.
Albania on Wednesday severed diplomatic ties with Iran and told Iranian diplomats and embassy staff to leave the country over a July cyberattack it blamed on the Islamic Republic. Tirana claimed that the attack had threatened to paralyze public services and posed security threats.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry in a statement called the allegations baseless and unproven, calling Albania’s decision a miscalculated and short-sighted measure in international relations.
The statement said that Iran, as a country whose infrastructures have been subjected to cyberattacks, rejects and condemns the use of such attacks against other countries.
It also said that the type of the measures taken by third parties in bringing the allegations against Iran shows that the countries which back terrorism and create sedition have exerted their influence in this regard.
The statement referred to organized political and media reactions made immediately after Albania’s decision, saying that a US statement released shortly after Tirana’s move and Zionist media welcoming the decision show that there has been a premediated plan aimed at creating a political atmosphere against the Islamic Republic.
Referring to Albania’s hosting the anti-Iran terrorist group, Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO), the statement expressed regret that the Albanian government has made an inappropriate decision under the influence of third parties./IRNA
