TIRANA, October 1 – The Chairman of the Freedom Party (FP), Ilir Meta, has reacted about the situation of the elderly in Albania on the occasion of October 1, the International Day of Older Persons in a post on social networks.
Meta said on Saturday that people of the third age group are the most at risk of ending up in extreme poverty as a result of this difficult situation in this Balkan country.
The UN is marking International Day of Older Persons by encouraging countries to draw attention to and challenge negative stereotypes and misconceptions about older persons and ageing, and to enable older persons to realize their potential.
The overall umbrella theme for the International Day of Older Persons in 2022 is “Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World.”
Meta, a former president and premier stressed that increasing pensions is a major obligation that must be fulfilled. Below follows the full message:
October 1, International Day of Older Persons. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness for more care for the elderly and this has an even greater importance for our country this year, since the elderly in Albania are the ones who are being hit the most by the increase in the cost of living.
The low pensions are insufficient to cope with the increase in the prices of food products, let alone medicines or medical care expenses.
People in the third age group are most at risk of ending up in extreme poverty as a result of this difficult situation.
The elderly in Albania deserve a dignified treatment and not alms and ridiculous government packages for coping with the price crisis. Increasing pensions is a major obligation for the third age generation. /Argumentum.al
