TIRANA, November 10 – Prime Minister Edi Rama praised on Thursday the indispensable role of the Congress of Spelling (1972) in the development of the Albanian language.
In the speech held at the jubilee conference on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Congress of Spelling, Rama expressed his gratitude to the intellectuals and signatories of the Congress, who undertook the work with the conviction that the nation is one, therefore the language had to be codified in a standard.
“Imagine today if dialects were added to the Albanian transition and we did not have a common language. The work of the Congress cannot be delegitimized just because it took place under the communist regime. The dangerous opponents of the Spelling Congress, who are also the biggest ignorants, do not have the culture of the language,” said Rama.
The Prime Minister stressed that the colossal work that the Congress did for the Albanian language cannot be rejected, just because it was held under the communist regime. The Prime Minister appreciated that in 1972, when the Spelling Congress was held, even though Albania was under the communist regime, it was actually a country with research and scientific institutions.
In his remarks in the conference President Bajram Began highlighted the need to enrich and protect the Albanian language from unnecessary borrowings and linguistic ignorance.
The head of state said that the priority of academics should be the enrichment of the vocabulary of the Albanian language and compiling of dictionaries that reflect its interaction with other languages.
Also, President Begaj noted that the subject of Albanian language and literature should be given priority in schools, so that the young generation not only acquire deep knowledge of the native language, but also be educated with pride for the culture to which they belong.
