TIRANA, December 5 – Some 55,281 members and sympathizers of the Democratic Party (DP) chose with their vote the candidates in 56 municipalities, who will compete in the electoral race on May 14 next year for the local elections in Albania.
As expected, the biggest surprises were offered in the battle for Tirana where 7 candidates competed against each other and only two managed to get the largest number of votes, but without securing final victory.
Deputy Belind Kellici received 4040 votes against 2196 votes secured by the other candidate in the race, doctor Ilir Alimehmeti. As none of the candidates managed to secure 50+1% of the votes, the race between the two candidates will be repeated on Sunday, December 11.
But Tirana is not the only municipality that goes to the runoff as there are 7 others where elections will be held again. As a result, the process will be repeated in Fier, Dibra, Mat, Kruja, Mirdita, Saranda and Librazhd on Sunday.
In four municipalities, that of Kuçova, Prrenjas, Memaliaj and Skrapar, the candidates of the Freedom Party emerged victorious and became part of the Democratic primaries.
While four other municipalities, such as that of Himara, Dropulli, Finiq and Pustec, have been left to the candidates of the Greek and Macedonian minorities. /Argumentum.al
