TIRANA, January 27 – Israel’s Ambassador to Albania, Galit Peleg, participated in the ceremony organized on the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day as well as the 31st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Albania and Israel on Friday.
“Today, January 27, the UN commemorates the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and marks the day of the liberation and destruction of the concentration camp. For most Jews, this day is very important not only for us as a state, but we remember our family members and those who have disappeared but also those that survived, remembering this dark time of humanity, most of those things that happened because of Germany,” said the Ambassador.
Further she said, Albania has shown the rest of the world that you don’t necessarily have to have the greatest power in the world to be humane. Albanians, regardless of religious belief, decided to follow human values and saved the Jews.
“Although the fascists and Nazis asked them to spy on the Jews, this did not happen. At the end of the war, Albania was the only country in Europe where there were more Jews than at the beginning of the war,” said Ambassador Peleg.
For his part, the chairman of the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party, Taulant Balla, said that Friday’s meeting concluded a series of meetings organized within the Israel Week dedicated to the commemoration of the Holocaust.
“The morality of world politics has been built on the values of anti-fascism for more than seven decades, and the salvation of the Jews in Albania is one of the most meaningful expressions of our people’s anti-fascism,” said Balla.
Speaking about the 31st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Albania and Israel, Balla said that after the opening of the respective representations in 1991, bilateral relations recognized a new dynamic in the political, economic, cultural and scientific fields. /Argumentum.al
