TIRANA, July 1 – The chairman of the Democratic Party (DP), Sali Berisha, has declared that the report on the electoral farce of the 14 May local elections has been completed and will be presented next week.
Berisha said in a press conference on June 30 that “the report on the electoral farce is finished and very soon, at the beginning of next week, it will be presented to the media and the Albanian public opinion.”
“Meanwhile, it has been presented and continues to be presented to the international public opinion,” he said.
According to DP head, the report is based on hundreds and thousands of facts and proves that the most shameful electoral farce took place on May 14 after the communist dictatorship in Albania and Europe. “This report proves that the 2023 elections were a process totally controlled by the government, a process in which Albanians voted under pressure like never before in 32 years,” said Berisha.
“It goes without saying that DP will never recognize false results,” he said, adding that the opposition is ready for battle.
However, he was unclear what kind of ‘battle’ the opposition will undertake because there have been many calls for protests and civil disobedience in the past but nothing has happened.
“The mission of the opposition is to restore the right to vote for Albanians. The opposition has been, is and remains sworn to the parliamentary system in Albania,” he said.
As for the changes to the electoral code, Berisha said that, “I have expressed myself that I fully agree with the establishment of the article on the obligatory voting of citizens.” He also agreed to lower the voting age to 16. In the meantime, Berisha said he supported a fully ‘clean proportional’ system and open lists. /argumentum.al
