TIRANA, May 21 – 20 cases of election corruption are being investigated by the Special Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK), which has registered criminal proceedings, but in most of them without specific names of the persons involved.
SPAK registered 42 criminal reports for corruption issues in the May 14 elections, and 21 reports were submitted by political entities in total until May 19.
SPAK was set in motion by citizens in two cases, 11 cases were referred by the State Police and 8 investigative materials were passed for jurisdiction by district prosecutors.
SPAK currently has 15 reported cases that are in the verification phase and there is no decision yet. It has sent 6 files to the prosecutors of general jurisdiction with the argument that there was no corruption after the verifications. Meanwhile, for 1 of the cases, SPAK has decided not to start the investigations.
In addition to the corruption cases, which are being investigated by SPAK, the data made public a few days ago by the General Prosecutor’s Office show that 18 investigations into election crimes out of 31 criminal reports have been registered throughout Albania.
Investigations have been registered for intimidation of voters, destruction of electoral material, or even use of public office for political activity. /argumentum.al
