President Ilir Meta paid homage to the Albanian National Hero Gjergj Kastrioti, known as Skanderbeg saying that Gjergj Kastriot with his work will inspire Albanians forever in all their battles for freedom, sovereignty, national and human dignity.
The ceremony took place at the Skanderbeg Mausoleum in Lezha and Meta laid a wreath there.
The event took place only 17 kilometers north of Laç, where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated a residential area of the houses of locals destroyed by the November 2019 tremor which caused dozens of victims.
PM Edi Rama was present in the inauguration ceremony as Erdogan came to Albania on official visit at the invitation of Tirana’s government head.
“Skanderbeg is not only our National Hero that gave the strongest identity to our nation in defense of freedom and national and human dignity,” said Meta at the event in Lezha.
President said that at the same time
Gjergj Kastrioti is also “an extraordinary personality and a hero of the European civilization who defined in irrevocable way for our nation’s European identity and Albania’s European future.”
Recalling the life and glorious work of our National Hero, Meta said that today is the day of passing into eternity of our National Hero, Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg, whom Fan Noli has rightly considered ‘the most alive Albanian among all Albanians,
“This figure is so great, that even centuries later served as the main inspiration of our National Renaissance to raise the Albanian people in the fight for freedom, for state formation, for independence,” said Meta.
Erdogan’s visit coincided with Skanderbeg’s day of death 554 years ago, after having led Albania for 25 years against the Ottoman occupation. / Argumentum.al
