TIRANA, September 9 – The Speaker of the Assembly, Lindita Nikolla, expressed on Saturday the solidarity of Albania for coping with the consequences of the earthquake that hit Morocco.
“Depressing news about the severe consequences of the earthquake in Morocco, with hundreds of people losing their lives and houses and buildings destroyed,” said Nikolla in a post on social networks.
The Speaker said that she shared the pain with the families of the victims and, on behalf of the Assembly of Albania, expressed solidarity with the people and authorities of Morocco for coping with the tragic consequences of this natural disaster.
A rare, powerful earthquake struck Morocco late on Friday night, killing over 1,000 people and damaging buildings from villages in the Atlas Mountains to the historic city of Marrakech.
The Moroccan government said the death toll has reached at least 1,037, with more than 1,200 injured.
The number of casualties is expected to climb as the emergency services work through the rubble and rescue teams reach more remote areas.
Local media reported that roads leading to the mountain region around the epicentre were jammed with vehicles and blocked with collapsed rocks, slowing rescue efforts.
Pope Francis also expressed solidarity with those affected by the disaster. “The pope expresses his profound solidarity with those who are touched in the flesh and heart by this tragedy,” the Vatican’s Secretary of State Pietro Parolin said on Telegram. /argumentum.al
