After the ceremonies to mark the 109th anniversary of the proclamation of the Independence of Albania in Vlora on November 28, the highest heads of state and government paid homage and laid wreaths at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Tirana on November 29.
Albania was liberated from the Nazi-fascist occupation on November 29, 1944 aligning itself with the anti-fascist from, but the right – wing does not accept that date claiming that November 28 is the time of the liberation.
The Head of State, Ilir Meta, the Speaker of Parliament, Lindita Nikolla and the Head of Government, Edi Rama laid wreaths at the Monument “Mother Albania” dedicated to the fallen heroes during the war.
Besides the highest officials there were family members of the heroes as well as the representatives of the veterans’ association.
President Ilir Meta congratulated on Monday the 77th anniversary of the Liberation of the country, from the Nazi-fascist occupiers during the Second World War in a release on social networks.
“Glory to the martyrs and heroes of the Anti-Fascist National Liberation War, the blood and sacrifices of the most patriotic sons and daughters for the protection of freedom and sovereignty of Albania”, said Meta, wishing this marked day for Albanians.
In a statement to the media, after the homage at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in the city of Fier, the Chairman of the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party, Taulant Balla said that “November 29 is a date marked in the history of our nation, because not only was the end of the Second World War but even the war for Albanians. According to him, Albania was the only nation in Europe that probably liberated the country from the Nazi-fascist occupier only with partisan forces of its own.
“A war of ideals, but also a war between a well-organized occupying force such as the German or Italian army, and meanwhile on the other hand a liberation force, such as the Albanian partisans who ranked Albania on the side of the victorious forces of World War II,” said Balla.
