TIRANA, October 16 – The 145th Assembly of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) has called for an end to the occupation of Ukraine by Russia and adopted a resolution stating that it must be condemned “the occupation of Ukraine and the annexation of territories by the Russian Federation in defense of the territorial integrity of all states”.
At the moment when the head deputy of the Russian Federation delegation took the floor in the Assembly, which is held in Kigali, Rwanda, with the participation of deputies from 178 countries, the Albanian delegation left the hall together with the deputies of the EU countries.
The war in Ukraine dominated the discussions of the Assembly where the vast majority of delegations condemned the unprovoked Russian aggression against Ukraine.
The Albanian delegation, like the vast majority of world delegations, supported the emergency resolution condemning the aggression against Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the Assembly focused the debate on increasing the authority of parliaments in the control of governments, protecting the status of deputies, promoting young people in politics, strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation to share the best experiences. Important attention was paid to the cases of the prohibition of democratic spaces in the parliaments of autocratic countries. Every country is under monitoring for maintaining the standards of democracy, it was said in the Assembly. /Argumentum.al
