TIRANA, May 22 – The buying of votes is a serious violation of Albanian law and the case of Fredi Beleri is already in court. This is what the Foreign Minister, Olta Xhaçka told her Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias in a meeting held in Brussels on Monday in the framework of the informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the EU member states with the foreign ministers of the countries of the Western Balkans.
“I clearly emphasized that this is a judicial case that should not affect the new page we have opened in our bilateral relations. This is neither a human rights issue nor a political issue, and it is no longer a bilateral issue,” she said.
According to her post, the minister said in the meeting with Dendias that Beleri enjoys the same rights as any other Albanian citizen and no Albanian citizen is above the law.
“The only thing we can all do is to wait patiently for the process to take its course and not to prejudge or guess about it,”said Minister Xhaçka.
The special court ruled on Monday to leave Beleri in prison together with his collaborator, Pandeli Kokaveshi, who was not present in the courtroom. The winner of the mayoral elections in Himara, Fredi Beleri, has been transferred from the Vlora detention center to the 313 detention center in Tirana.
Beleri was arrested two days before the May 14 elections on charges of electoral corruption. /argumentum.al
