TIRANA – “Our thoughts are with the Croatian people, especially with those affected by the earthquake and their families,” has said Albanian President Ilir Meta.
In a message of solidarity posted on his FB account on Sunday the President wished a quick recovery to the Croatians affected by the strong earthquake.
An earthquake measuring 5.3 struck a wide area north of the capital, Zagreb, at 6:23 am on Sunday, causing widespread damage and panic amid a partial lockdown of the capital because of the spread of the coronavirus. Several buildings have cracked walls and rooftops have been damaged, while Zagreb’s downtown streets were littered with debris. Zagreb’s iconic cathedral was also damaged, as the top of one of its two spires has collapsed. Officials first said a 15-year-old was killed, but doctors later said that she is in critical condition and that they are fighting for her life. They gave no immediate details on the extent of other injuries.
“In these very difficult moments for friendly Croatia, which is also facing the Covid-19 pandemic, I express all our solidarity and support,” Meta said.
The situation created by the earthquake in Croatia, particularly in its capital Zagreb, is additionally complicated due to the outbreak of the coronavirus infection. /argumentum.al
