TIRANA, July 30 – The Chairman of the Democratic Union for Integration (BDI), Ali Ahmeti, addressed a public letter to Prime Minister of North Macedonia Dimitar Kovacevski through a Facebook status on Sunday, saying that the ministers and functionaries of the BDI will resign, which will enter into force after the constitutional amendments are voted in a plenary session of the Parliament.
Since the Democratic Union for Integration and I remain committed to determining that the Euro-Atlantic integration, with full rights of the state, except that in NATO, also in the European Union, as well as the unbroken alliance with the United States of America, have been, are and remain the greatest interest of all our citizens, regardless of their national and religious affiliation, we ministers and government officials from the ranks of the Democratic Union for Integration resign from the posts we are currently holding because of the condition of the opposition that they would vote for constitutional changes if the Democratic Union for Integration leaves the Government, said Ahmeti.
According to him, the resignations become effective immediately after the moment when the opposition votes on the constitutional changes.
Changes to the constitution should be made for the inclusion of the Bulgarian minority in its preamble, as a state-forming people, and are based on what is known as the “French proposal” for the resolution of North Macedonia’s disputes with Bulgaria.
If this does not happen, then Sofia retains the right to use the veto, or block the talks, as it did in 2020.
The Macedonian opposition is against the changes, as according to it, “the Bulgarian side will not stop with its conditions even if these changes are approved”.
The parliamentary debate on the amendment of the constitution started on July 25, while the plenary session is scheduled to be held on August 18. /argumentum.al
