TIRANA – Armed forces have been ordered to be engaged in the tough fight against coronavirus epidemics in Albania as a senior military declared that they will be in support of the State Police.
“The tasks of the Armed Forces (AF) of the Republic of Albania are to support the State Police to control or raise the awareness of the citizens, mainly those who have travelled to Italy and Greece,” said the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, brigadier general Bardhyl Kollcaku in a press conference in Tirana on Wednesday.
General Kollcaku explained that they wanted to make aware citizens coming from trips to neighboring countries, Italy and Greece, to self-quarantine. “We will continue our work as long as it is necessary,” he said without giving any deadline for AF’s mobilization. But, according to the senior officer, their presence will be not only in Tirana but in other cities, as well.
“Our plans are flexible. Currently they have been sent even to other cities of Albania,” he said, revealing that there was a detailed plan.
As a follow up measures the government is considering the option of stopping the urban transport services in Tirana Capital and the seaside city of Durres.
“We are assessing to halt the urban transport in Tirana and Durres in the coming days,” said on Wednesday PM Edi Rama, who declared that there was a challenge in front.
“We cannot stop the spread of the virus but it is very important how the protection system is built. These measures are our defensive system,” said the government’s head, who is being criticized harshly by the opposition for the delayed actions to prevent the threatening spread of the coronavirus epidemics. /argumentum.al
