TIRANA – “I congratulate our neighbors on their accession to the North Atlantic Treaty and look forward to the country’s internal reforms,” has said Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov congratulating North Macedonia on its accession to NATO becoming the 30th member state of the alliance.
“Further results are needed in strengthening the rule of law, freedom of the media, reforming the security sector, and bringing the armed forces into line with NATO standards,” said Mr. Borisov in his official Facebook profile on March 27 as quoted by BNT news agency on Saturday.
North Macedonia became NATO’s newest member on 27 March 2020, upon depositing its instrument of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty with the US State Department in Washington DC. NATO Allies signed North Macedonia’s Accession Protocol in February 2019, after which all 29 national parliaments voted to ratify the country’s membership.
North Macedonia’s flag is to be raised alongside those of the other 29 member states at NATO headquarters in Brussels and at two other commands simultaneously on March 30.
“We hope that joint activities between our armed forces within NATO will contribute both to the development of defense capabilities and interoperability and to the development of brotherly relations between our two countries, ” said Prime Minister Borissov. /argumentum.al
