TIRANA, November 26–This Sunday marks the 111th anniversary of the raising of the independence flag in Durrës, from November 26, 1912.
In commemoration of this important day for the coastal city, but also for the whole country, which preceded the national liberation, the municipality of Durrës has organized a solemn ceremony.
Invited to the ceremony, among others, were the President of the Republic of Albania, Bajram Begaj, as well as the mayor Emiriana Sako.
“We are honored to repeat today, 111 years later, with solemnity and responsibility, the historic act performed by the first mayor of Durrës, Hafiz Ali Podgorica”, said Sako in the opening speech, while President Begaj called Durrës “the first city of our renaissance”.
Begaj expressed his gratitude for the sacrifices that the people of Durrës have always made for the good of the country and the wisdom they have shown, overcoming any differences for the national interest.
“We will always be grateful to the citizens of the Durrës region, brave patriots in the challenging efforts to open Albanian schools and preserve the language, activists of the national issue with their commitment as part of the nationwide movement for freedom and independence.
In a time of political, administrative and social chaos, as well as the lack of clarity about the future, the people of Durrës, with prudence and ingenuity, became the forerunners of the most important event for the nation, which would take place only two days later in Vlora” , he said.
Begaj did not leave without mentioning the earthquake four years ago, which he accompanied with a call for the citizens of Durrës.
