“Throughout the 30- year period of democracy in our country, the merit and contribution of my friend Sali Berisha, the most pro-American and pro-Western man and leader I have ever known, has been and will be essential and indisputable,” has declared the well known figure of the opposition Democratic Party (DP), Tritan Shehu.
The statement of Shehu, an elected deputy in the new Parliament on the list of the current DP chairman, Lulzim Basha, was released on FB a few hours after the US State Secretary, Antony Blinken declared the former PM and former President of Albania, Sali Berisha and his family persona “non grata” to the United States.
“Former President of Albania Sali Berisha’s corrupt acts undermined democracy in Albania,” said Secretary Antony Blinken in a note on Twitter on Wednesday.
According to DP deputy Shehu, Berisha’s pro-Western vision has clarified Democrats in their efforts for integration, free society, justice and prosperity.
“And it will be valid until the achievement of our aspiration: ‘we love Albania like all of Europe’…,” stressed Shehu, a former PM and FM, in his statement without mentioning the charges of Blinken against Berisha of being involved in corrupt actions, such as misuse of public funds and interference in public processes, including the use of power to personal benefits and to enrich political allies as well as family members.
There is not yet any comment by the DP Head, Lulzim Basha, or Berisha himself on this extreme punishment of banning a former President of Albania like Berisha known as the most pro- American figure in this Balkan country known for his ‘US anti-imperialism’ approach.
