TIRANA, July 29 – The group of the Democratic Party (DP) of the former chairman, Lulzim Basha held the elections for the new leader with two candidates in the race, Lulzim Basha and Gjergj Hani.
The voting process which started at 8:00 on Saturday ended and the counting of the ballots started. The number of party members who went to the ballot boxes was lower compared to the last elections of 2021 in DP. There were 71 polling stations in 12 districts.
The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Jemin Gjana, said at the end of the official voting schedule that until 17:00 approximately 13,700 DP members had voted.
“From the data I saw in the voting centers that I myself inspected, there was an influx of voters. Individuals who had membership cards voted, others were not accepted. It is a relatively high number. According to the data of 17:00, the voter turnout is 13,700 and the participation is 54%. There were no problems, it was a peaceful voting day,” Gjana said in a statement to the media.
DP General Secretary Gazment Bardhi convened the National Council on Thursday where it was decided to cancel the July 29 elections, but it was Basha’s other grouping that disagreed with this decision.
The Bardhi group took the case of the DP to court on Friday, filing the decision of the National Council for the cancellation of the elections, the suspension of the Chairmanship and the request for the de-registration of Lulzim Basha, who continues to be the chairman of the DP in the register of political parties.
On the other hand, the Chairmanship of the DP took the party seal from Bardhi and passed it on to the Legal Secretary, Indri Sefa a few days ago. /argumentum.al
