TIRANA, January 23 – The European Union has called on Montenegro to overcome the current political situation in the country only through constitutional means, so that the candidate country can continue its journey in the European integration process.
Montenegro was one of the topics of discussion at the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the EU in Brussels on Monday.
Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon and Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg reported on the situation in Montenegro. They visited Montenegro on behalf of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell. EU officials say that these visits of the foreign ministers of the two member countries to Podgorica were successful.
They said that the political leaders in Montenegro had been sent a clear message that the current situation could only be resolved by legal means, also demanding the election of two judges, in order to make the Constitutional Court functional. This would be a prerequisite for holding free and regular elections in Montenegro.
Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Gërlić Radman spoke about the situation in Montenegro after he had also visited the country a few days ago.
“We invite Montenegro to seriously understand the EU’s message about the functioning of the Constitutional Court and the controversial law for the president. We need Montenegro, we need a stable Montenegro, clearly oriented towards European values,” said the Croatian minister, expressing his belief that Montenegro will overcome the political crisis and advance in the path of European integration.
Some diplomatic sources in Brussels have drawn attention to the fact that the entire accession process can be stopped if the rule of law and the functionality of the Constitutional Court are not ensured./ Argumentum.al
