TIRANA, May 9 – The 78th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany is being celebrated in countries across Europe, with national holidays to honour the occasion.
Victory in Europe Day marks the formal acceptance of Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces by the Allies, and the official end of World War II in Europe on the Eastern Front.
On such an occasion President Bajram Begaj vlerësoi said that on Europe Day Albanians celebrate unity and peace, values that Albania shares with all European countries.
“As we look to the future, it is clear that Albania belongs in the EU by virtue of its cultural, historical and political ties to Europe,” said Begaj in a post on social networks on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Edi Rama congratulated Europe Day today by sharing a photo on social networks with the inscription “Europe is here”.
In the meantime, the Ambassador of the European Union in Tirana, Christiane Hohmann, evaluated Albania’s progress in the European integration process.
In an activity organized on the occasion of Europe Day at the Dajti National Park Visitor Center, Hohmann said that Albania is Europe.
“A year ago we had not opened the negotiations, while in July we held the first Intergovernmental Conference. Look at how many things have been done and this should be a day that Albanians should be very proud of. We have come a long way in these 10-11 months and this is very important,” she said.
The ambassador underlined that, “it is true that there is still a lot of work to do for Albania to become a member state with full rights in the EU,” stressing that Albania is Europe.
“You are Europe. I can’t emphasize this more than that,” the Ambassador said. /Argumentum.al
