The former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) commander, Jakup Krasniqi was arrested in Kosovo on Wednesday and transferred to the Kosovo Specialist Chambers detention centre in the Netherlands, his lawyer confirmed as Gazeta Express reported.
Krasniqi was a KLA spokesperson during the 1998-99 Kosovo war. After the war he joined the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and held several ministerial posts and was Speaker of Kosovo Parliament.
His lawyer Valon Hasani said that Krasniqi after the arrest in his house in capital Pristina is being transferred to the Hague and the SPO has not presented to him any concrete charges adding however that his client has been indicted of charges “falling under the Specialist Chambers jurisdiction.”
The Hague-based Kosovo Specialist Chambers and Specialist Prosecutor’s Office was established in 2015 to prosecute and try alleged crimes committed by the KLA.
The SPO confirmed Wednesday morning that they are conducting operations in Pristina adding that their operations are being supported by the Kosovo Police and the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX).
Jakup Krasniqi is one of the key figures of the KLA. He was summoned for questioning by the Hague prosecutors in July 2019. Currently Krasniqi holds the post of the chairman of National Council of Social-Democratic Initiative, a junior coalition partner in Kosovo’s Government. /GazetaExpress/
