Former mayor of Vora Agim Kajmaku, who ran as a candidate of the ruling Socialist Party (SP) in that municipality (15 km west of Tirana), has been arrested by Italian police after being caught with 20 kilograms of cocaine. Italian media reported on Saturday that Kajmaku was arrested on May 27 in an anti-drug operation carried out in the area of San Benedeto del Tronto in Italy.
The former mayor of Vora is learned to have hidden the drugs in flower vases. The first information speaks of a value of 1 million euros of seized drugs.
Kajmaku and the group he served were under strict 24-hour surveillance by Italian police for about 60 day. To follow step by step every movement, the Italian police has mounted cameras in several blocks of apartments and neighborhoods where conversations and meetings were held that had the theme of illegal narcotics activity in Albania and Europe.
After his capture, the Italian authorities requested information from the Albanian authorities regarding this citizen who was among the youngest people to join the group. For more than 8 months Italian police had been tracking him down as they began to keep him under surveillance until he was arrested with 20 kilograms of cocaine.
Kajmaku was with his nephew when he was arrested by Italian police with 20kg of cocaine in the San Benedetto del Tronto area. The cocaine was hidden inside pots of flowers bought by Kajmaku, a longtime customer at a flower nursery. Kajmaku and his nephew had bought the small plants in the nursery, but then placed them in larger pots that they bought at a local business, in order to hide the drugs inside. Before the change was made, the owner of the nursery called the Italian police, who then arrested Kajmaku and his nephew.
The former mayor of Vora has solved the problems with the Albanian justice, but has just opened them with the Italian justice.
He was elected mayor in the 2017 local elections, where the opposition did not participate, but he did not enjoy that term for long. The Democratic Party revealed an undeclared sentence of him in Greece for counterfeiting money, which he should have stated on the decriminalization form. The Central Election Commission dismissed him and the Police immediately declared him wanted.
