TIRANA, October 28 – The CDU/CSU German MP, Gunther Krichbaum, has said that Albania’s path towards the EU is irreversible and that the German Bundestag supports this path.
Asked at a press conference on the investigations into former Prime Minister Sali Berisha on Saturday, Krichbaum said that everyone is equal before the law and that prosecution authority against corruption, SPAK should not be attacked.
“The statements about the politicization of SPAK are absurd, we should protect it, not attack it. Immunity is not a privilege for certain parliamentarians. It protects the functionality of the parliament,” he said.
In a comment on his visit to Albania, Krichbaum said that, “I have to say that I have not only met with Lulzim Basha, but I have also met with other opposition members, such as Jorida Tabaku. We are in contact with each other. I have also had meetings with representatives of Berisha’s group and continue to meet them. I’m sorry that the DP is divided at the moment.”
As for Berisha, he said that he is now under strong accusation from SPAK. “Initially there is a presumption of innocence for each accused until the innocence is proven in court. The charges are strong. Here we are talking about processes involving certain properties. America has declared him non grata,” German MP said.
For his part Berisha turned down what Krichbaum said announcing that he will press charges against him for slander. /argumentum.al
