TIRANA, December 1 – The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier has said that he is excited by the fact that the European spirit is felt in Albania.
“I appeal to all people who have doubts about the EU, who have lost sight of the historical dimension of the European project, ‘come to Albania and let yourself be ‘infected’ with the pro-European ‘spirit’,” he said in a speech held at the Albanian Assembly on Thursday.
Steinmeier said that Albania has devoted itself to Europe in an almost empathetic way. “I have been able to observe your clear pro-European stance through numerous contacts and I have felt joy even more at this time when a skeptical policy towards the EU is being felt in Europe.”
In addition, the German President called on the opposition and the government to work together overcoming the political differences for the common destination of membership in the European Union.
Steinmeier assured that Albania can have confidence in the further support of Germany.
“I know that Albania’s path to the EU will continue to be ambitious. Work further on the fight against obstacles, the fight against corruption and organized crime, the reform of justice,” he said.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier also spoke about the war in Ukraine and its consequences. He said that the EU has remained steadfast against the Russian attack. Steinmeier also spoke about Albania’s position, saying it is a reliable partner and it has shown this in the Security Council. The German President will stay in Albania for two days, and Friday’s agenda includes meetings and other activities as well as a visit to the southern city of Berat. /Argumentum.al
